Rukia's issue, at least when we first see her Bankai, is that she can't move after it's activation and she requires a bit of time to safetly deactivate her ability (or she might break). We're shown at the start that Rukia is able to fight evenly with a hollow, and that she's willing to sacrifice herself for others. Would I have preferred Ichigo and Rukia? Definitely!
